A Grossly Underrated Travel Destination

Before I left for Europe, every time I mentioned that I would be going to Bratislava, everyone within hearing distance would ask me why. When I tell then I’m going to attend a friend’s wedding, the next question would always be “why would your friend choose to have her wedding in Bratislava?” With the way people were reacting, one would think Bratislava is such a horrible place. My friend’s husband (soon to be husband at that time) is from Bratislava, that’s why their wedding was held there. And if you’re wondering if I think Bratislava is horrible, I’d say nothing could be further from the truth. Also, if you’ve seen the movie Hostel and you’re wondering if Bratislava is really like that— rest assured, it’s not.

Okay, I get it when people are saying that Bratislava is boring, or when people say it’s not worth going here. Admittedly, it has less attractions compared to its neighboring countries, and whatever attractions you’ll see would seem to pale in comparison, but it does have its distinct charm. If you only have time to visit a few places in Europe, then I guess skipping this place is warranted. But if you ever find yourself here, you wouldn’t regret spending a few days in the place.

IMG_4721We stayed at the Radison Blu Carlton Hotel, which is located in the town square. Pretty pricey, but it’s really convenient since the wedding reception would be held there. And every attraction of note is within walking distance since it’s adjacent to the old part of town. The old town may not be as massive as the ones in other European cities, but you’d still get that distinct European atmosphere.

The wedding was held in The Church of St. Elisabeth, or more popularly known as the Blue Church. It’s one of the famous landmarks in the city. I’m not a fan of the architecture though. To me, it looks like a blown up child’s toy, somewhat plasticky, both from the outside and from the inside. A lot of people loved it because it really stands out for being so different compared to adjacent buildings. But I dunno, I just couldn’t appreciate it.

The wedding reception was awesome. The food was great, and i got to try a lot of Slovakian liquor. I only wish i could remember most of what happened. You ever had one of those nights when you couldn’t remember anything at all after a certain time? It was one of those nights. I woke up the next morning wearing only my undies, and I had no idea how i got naked. LOL. I really drank a lot. Partly because I was really happy for my friend. Partly because I’ve never tried those drinks before and the novelty kept me going. And partly because I AM A DRUNKARD, though i really am trying to change haha. Maybe it’s for the best that I don’t remember anything at all. There’s a huge chance that I’ve done something I’d regret. It’s been several months since that night and no one’s been suing me though, so if ever I’ve done something nasty, it probably wasn’t too bad.

Cheers!
